Absinthe Spoon and Absinthe Spoon

Absinthe spoons are an important utensil

Absinthlöffel

absinthe spoon

Absinthe spoon Feuille to prepare with a piece of sugar cubes

The use of an Absinthe spoon is an indispensable utensil in the preparation of Absinthe, because this drink, as it is in the bottle, is a concentrate, which must be diluted with ice-cold water and possibly also a small or larger piece of sugar cube. Here you will find a large selection of Absinthe spoons made of different types of metal with different coatings. If the Absinthe spoons are made of stainless steel, they are of course uncoated. These stainless steel spoons are then best for preparing after the fire ritual to use. Also the size is different, but in the broadest sense similar. The Absinthe spoons must all fit on a glass so that the sugar cube can be placed on it and diluted with water so that the sugar can flow through the perforations, recesses and holes in the glass. More information about the different types of Absinthe spoons can be found under the product selection.

There are 6 types of Absinthe spoons

If one can believe the most important French Absinthe historians, one can divide the Absinthe spoons into 6 different categories. One of the most important historians who provide us with knowledge from the Belle Epoque is David Nathan-Maister, who in his book "The Absinthe Encyclopedia" also divides these spoons into six categories. Although a few historians also have other slightly different opinions, here we want to pass on the findings of David Nathan-Maister, who comes from Great Britain, to them.

Perforated Absinthe spoons have cut-outs

Perforierter Absinthlöffel

Perforated Absinthe Spoon

There are many perforated Absinthe spoons on the market as historical antiques, but also as replicas.

Perforated Absinthe spoons are, as the name suggests, spoons with perforations. Perforations or perforations are recesses in the solid material, which can be round holes or square in shape. These perforations are used in the absinthe spoons so that the sugar cubes that lie on them during preparation can flow off in a diluted form and thus get into the glass. It does not matter whether the sugar is ignited or only diluted with ice-cold water by a carafe or a high-quality fountain. Perforated Absinthe spoons are the most common type of Absinthe spoons.

"Grilles" spoons are mostly symmetric.

Grilles Löffel

Grilles spoon

The three legs of this Grilles spoon are symmetrically centered on the edge of the glass.

"Grilles" spoons are another category. They are also called "Les Rondes" (the rounds) in French. They originate from Switzerland. What they have in common is that they are relatively symmetrical. Most of the time you have three identical legs which all rest on the edge of the absinthe glass and thus place the middle piece symmetrically in the middle. The sugar cube to be diluted is automatically placed symmetrically in the middle of the glass so that it cannot drip along the side. Known shapes of the "Grilles" are: Flower blossoms, snowflakes, skeletons or gothic mystical symbols.

Long Absinthe spoons have an elongated shape

Langer Absinthlöffel

Long Absinthe Spoon

A long Absinthe spoon is important for Absinthe glasses with larger openings, so that the spoon lies stable on the edge of the glass and centers the sugar.

Another species are long absinthe spoons, which are relatively rare in the world of absinthe nowadays. Usually the area on which the sugar cube is placed is in the middle of the entire length of the spoon. This is the difference to the usual classic spoons, which offer the sugar deposit at the upper end of the whole spoon length. The long Absinthe spoons are suitable, as the name already indicates, for Absinthe glasses with large openings, since the diameter on which the spoon rests can also be significantly larger. Thus it is possible to place the sugar piece in the middle on very large glasses by simply turning the spoon over and having the middle sugar tray in the right position.

Eiffel Tower spoons as Reproductions

Eiffelturm Absinthlöffel

Eiffel Tower Spoon

Here a typical historical replica of an Eiffel tower Absinthe spoon

The Eiffel Tower Spoons are absinthe spoons that replicate the shape of the "Tour Eiffel" - the Eiffel Tower. To unveil the Eiffel Tower, these absinthe spoons were developed in 1889 during the "Exposition Universelle" in the form of the tower in Paris. There are many variations, which reproduce this form in their own individual way. It is very difficult to tell the difference between an original real spoon from this period and other counterfeit spoons. Only absolute renowned Absinthe experts, traders or art historians should be able to distinguish such original Eiffel Tower Absinthe spoons from counterfeit Absinthe spoons. However, not every Absinthe connoisseur will need such expensive original spoons and be willing to invest so much money. Because: There are enough replicas on the market today that come in the same form and with which you can celebrate your absinthe ritual. You can find faithful replicas of Eiffel Tower Absinthe Spoons at the Absinthe Oasis.

Wormwood branch Absinthe Spoon Branches and Leaves

Wermutzweig Absinth Löffel

Wormwood Branch Absinthe Spoon

One of the most beautiful Absinthe spoons is the Feuille (French: leaf).

A further variant of the spoons are the wormwood branch absinthe spoons. These spoons present the "Artemisia Absinthium" (wormwood) in the right light in the form of wormwood branches or wormwood leaves, which are often artfully branched. In our opinion, these are the most beautiful Absinthe spoons that are currently available as true to original replicas. Simply place the sugar on the wormwood leaf and let yourself be carried away into the wonderful world of absinthe. These Absinthe spoons come in more or less branched form and therefore more filigree or more stable. Every Absinthe drinker can satisfy his own individual taste by choosing the right spoon.

"Poilu" spoon - Absinthe spoon from soldiers

Poilu Löffel

Poilu spoon

Almost similar to a Poilu spoon, which was primitively made of scrap metal by French soldiers in trenches during the First World War.

"Poilu" spoons come from the nicknames of French soldiers from the First World War. A "Poilu" was a soldier or colloquially in German: a compatriot. Actually poilu means "hairy". Related to the soldiers, it was understandable that they had no time to shave if they had to wait a long time in the trenches. But there was time for another hobby. Making absinthe spoons from residual materials such as metal from grenades or bombs. The so-called "Poilu" Absinthe Spoons were created during long waiting periods between battles in the trenches of soldiers and were a sought-after souvenir for the family or loved ones at home. Sometimes the Poilu spoons were made from leftover materials from ordinary household items such as inkpots, vases or even knives, which were punched out to allow the sugar to flow into the absinthe glass.

You need an Absinthe spoon, because it is an essential utensil when preparing your Green Fairy in style.

Ulrich Hosse - Absinth-Oase

Welche Alternative zum Absinthlöffel gibt es?

Of course there are also alternatives to the Absinthe spoon when it comes to the traditional preparation of the Green Fairy, as long as the goal is to dissolve a sugar cube with ice-cold water and finally let it flow into the Absinthe glass.
The Absinthe Dropper, which is called Brouilleur in French, is an alternative utensil.

Absinth Tropfer oder Brouilleur

Absinthe Dropper

The Absinthe Dropper, also called Brouilleur, is also used for the traditional preparation of the green fairy drink.

You can add ice cubes or very cold water together with the desired amount of sugar to the Absinthe drip. Mixed, the water drips together with the sugar through the lower hole onto a kind of rocker, which then directs the drops into the glass with an acoustic clip flap once on the left and once on the right. It replaces not only the spoon, but also possibly an Absinthe fountain or Absinthe carafe. Since the holding legs of the dropper are flexible, you can also adapt it to a slightly larger Absinthe glass. But please do not bend too much here, so that nothing is damaged.
If you are interested in absinthe together with matching accessories, you can also take a look at an absinthe set. There is often a combination of delicious fairy potion and useful accessories. To be honest, you have to mention, that rather inferior varieties want to convince with Absinthe sets. The good brands remain the exception here. But these sets are also suitable for cheap gifts, if you want to inspire your friends and acquaintances for the topic. But if you want to know what is good or bad with the Absinthe varieties, we provide you with an Absinthe comparison with ratings, which should give you a rough overview of the good and very good brands. Nevertheless, the personal and individual taste of each individual remains the main criterion for the personal selection of the best Absinthe for himself.
